I've always dreamed of going truffle hunting in Tuscany, and recently I finally had the chance—and it surpassed all my expectations! I had built up some ideas in my mind about what it might be like, mostly filled with misconceptions and skepticism. I'm thrilled to share that reality proved far better than my imagination.
Before this experience, I mistakenly believed truffle hunting could only happen in late autumn, specifically October or November. Maybe that's why I had never managed to make time for it before. But as it turns out, different varieties of truffles grow throughout the year, meaning you can embark on this unique adventure anytime, depending on the type you're after.

I also assumed truffle hunting would involve hours of wandering aimlessly through the woods with minimal chances of actually finding anything. Secretly, I even wondered if guides tossed a few truffles into the woods ahead of time for us to "discover." Thankfully, this notion was quickly put to rest. Filippo, our guide, explained that truffles indeed grow abundantly, but wild animals such as boars eagerly seek them out too, creating fierce competition. Strategy, timing, and the expert noses of trained dogs are key to successful truffle hunting.
We booked our truffle hunting adventure in late May with Tuscan Truffle Tales, led by the fantastic Filippo and his delightful dog Meraki, near the picturesque town of Radda in the Chianti region. From the moment we arrived, Meraki stole our hearts with her joyful energy, clearly excited about the hunt ahead. Every time she found a truffle, she'd high-five Filippo before enthusiastically rolling around, celebrating her victory.
Before starting, Filippo educated us on truffle varieties, their seasonal availability, flavor profiles, and the fascinating methods for training truffle-hunting dogs. With newfound knowledge, we ventured into the woods for about an hour, ultimately uncovering six or seven beautiful black truffles—far more than I'd anticipated!
Our experience continued with a relaxing lunch and wine tasting back at Filippo's home. A talented chef, Filippo transformed our fresh truffle finds into an incredible meal. We enjoyed delicious antipasti and a perfect pasta dish topped with our freshly gathered truffles, complemented by a tasting of four to five local Chianti wines. Surrounded by gorgeous Tuscan views under a shaded pergola, we savored every bite and sip.
This private tour was truly special and unforgettable. Filippo even offers cooking classes for those looking to extend their experience. For anyone curious about the authentic, uniquely Tuscan tradition of truffle hunting, I can't recommend Tuscan Truffle Tales highly enough. And dog lovers, beware—you'll definitely want to bring Meraki home with you!
